Colonial kitsch

People nowadays would be horrified—I hope—by the images that used to appear on picture postcards at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. French and Dutch grandmothers might find in their mailboxes images of bare-breasted Algerian harem girls or Afro-Surinamese men in loincloths, respectively. Their American counterparts might receive a postcard depicting the mutilated body of a lynched black man, hanging from a tree in the Jim Crow South. And Japanese grandmothers plausibly received images of Taiwanese aborigines, posing with one or more severed heads.27 What did people say when sending “colonial porn” to a beloved matriarch? “Wish you were here, Nana!”?
